Artist Statement

My work explores (im)perfection through the tension between linear and nonlinear, geometric and organic forms. Having grown up in Japan, where precision and conformity are often valued, I’ve long been fascinated by imperfection and nuance. I question our attraction to perfection—in beauty, academics, and society—when imperfection is what makes us unique.

Clay is central to this exploration because of its resistance to control. I first encountered it in art school but struggled with its unpredictability. When I returned to clay in 2022, I began to embrace these qualities rather than resist them.

My own pull toward perfection and control has become part of the process. Through clay, I explore the space between control and release, precision and unpredictability, where nuance and imperfection can emerge.

Clay Experience

Slab-building is the technique I’ve come to enjoy most after experimenting with wheel throwing and other hand-building methods. It gives my work a sense of structure, while still allowing the finished pieces to feel organic and fluid, with geometric lines and curves.

I usually start by rolling a block of clay into sheets. Sometimes I sketch an idea first, but more often I simply start cutting the clay into shapes and see where it takes me. I like the freedom of not knowing exactly what the piece will become until I’m working on it.
